Truck Bed Liner Spray - A Bad Idea?

Truck bed liner spray is a very popular way to coat and protect truck beds. Let's face it. Trucks are so expensive, who wants to really use a truck for hauling and risk scratching and beating up the bed? If it's a company truck and a business expense...maybe? But to beat up a beautiful truck, especially a new one, is more than many people can stand.
The biggest installers are Line-X and Rhino Coatings. Either or both companies probably has a franchise in your area. Plus there are several other installers that have nation-wide locations too. What you get from the major bedliner installers is a quality product and a guarantee of satisfaction. The bed coatings can be reworked too, so any damage over time is repairable.
The real key to the durability of the liners is the thickness of the coating. Most of the professionally applied coatings are a two part material mixed at the spray gun. The coating contains a catalyst that promotes drying so the coating is dry almost instantly after it's applied. The coating thickness is about 1/8 inch up to 1/4 inch and includes rubber material for cushioning. Any wear to the bed just reduces the thickness of the coating and doesn't get down to the underlying metal of the bed.
Are there disadvantages for spray on bed liners? There are a few. The liners are permanent, so you can't change your mind about wanting a liner. Also, to guarantee adhesion of the coating, the original bed coating must be destroyed by etching by sanding...yikes! But you're getting a new coating any way. Many coatings will fade in color when exposed to the sun. Some of the newer coatings are UV resistant. Cost is steep for a spray on liner.
Alternative bed protection includes: plastic drop in liners, truck bed carpet, truck bed mats and even a do-it-yourself bed liner kit. For heavy duty use a carpet liner or a rubber mat is great even over a spray in liner. A do-it-yourself kit is much cheaper, but is far less durable than a professional job since the coating is much thinner. It's hard to beat a spray on bedliner for truck bed protection.
